Riverside path along the Kwai River in Kanchanaburi
A quiet bend on the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi province

A small outfit on a big river

Trailhead Quietude started with a simple observation: most visitors to Kanchanaburi spend their time at the bridge and the war cemetery, then leave. The river — all 173 kilometres of it upstream from Tha Maka — goes largely unseen. We set out to change that, slowly.

Our team of four guides grew up in this part of Western Thailand. Araya handles the raft house, Krit leads the heritage walks, and two more of us manage SUP hire and transfers. We keep group sizes small by design — four to six people on a walk, one booking at a time on the raft house.

Bookings are taken by phone or through this form. We respond the same day, usually within two hours during office hours.

Quiet by intention, not by accident

A few principles shape every booking and every day out on the river.

Small windows, small groups

We take one booking per slot on the raft house and cap guided walks at six people. The pace adjusts to the group, not the other way around.

Local guides, local knowledge

Every experience is led by someone who grew up in Kanchanaburi province. They know which viewpoints are worth the detour and which to skip.

Clear pricing, no extras

The price listed is the price you pay. Transfers, water, and snacks are included where described. There are no surcharges added at the riverbank.

Heritage markers along a river path in Kanchanaburi

Walking where the history sits

The stretch of riverside path south of Tha Maka passes several heritage markers that most visitors never reach by road. Krit leads this route at a walking pace — roughly 8 km return — with stops chosen for their shade, their views, and their stories.

Suitable for anyone comfortable with a half-day walk on flat to gently uneven ground. Departs at 07:30 to catch the cooler morning air.

A traditional Thai raft house on a calm green river

Two nights on the river, properly

The raft house sits in a calm bay about 20 minutes upstream from our base. Rooms are simple — wooden walls, ceiling fan, a good mattress — and the deck faces east for the morning light. Breakfast is included; dinner can be arranged the day before.

A single kayak is available for guest use throughout the stay, along with a printed map of the nearest walks and a local snack stop that opens Thursday to Sunday.

What you can count on

We keep our setup straightforward. Here is what is in place for every booking.

Activity insurance

All guided experiences and rental equipment are covered under a current commercial activity policy.

Same-day response

Enquiries sent before 16:00 (ICT) receive a reply the same day. Bookings are confirmed by phone when possible.

TAT-registered guides

Our lead guides hold current registration with Thailand's Tourism Authority and are familiar with the local river conditions.

Equipment checks

SUP boards, paddles, and leashes are inspected and rinsed before every hire. Kayaks on the raft house are checked at the start of each stay.

The river has its own rhythm

Follow the water

Routes and schedules adjust to water levels and morning weather. We push back departure times when it makes the walk or paddle better — not to fill a timetable.

Work with the season

Kanchanaburi's river runs highest from August to October, making that the best time for rafting and kayaking. The dry months from November to March suit walking. We tell you this upfront.

Stay close to home

All food, transfers, and equipment come from within the Tha Maka area. We have worked with the same two driver families and the same provisions supplier since we launched in 2022.

What's on offer

All prices are in Thai Baht and include what is described. Nothing is added later.

What guests have said

"The heritage walk was the highlight of our whole trip. Krit knows every bend of that path and pointed out things we'd never have noticed on our own. We were back at the car by noon with time for lunch."

"We stayed on the raft house for two nights in April and barely wanted to leave. The kayak was there whenever we wanted it, and breakfast on the deck each morning was genuinely peaceful. Well worth it."

Chiang Mai · April 2025

"The SUP hire was easy to sort and the walkthrough at the start was genuinely useful — I'd never been on a board before. The river was flat and calm and I was out for nearly three hours."

Before you book

What is the best time of year to visit for walking?

November through February are the most comfortable months for the heritage walk — cooler air in the mornings and low humidity. March and April are walkable but warm; we start earlier (06:30) to avoid the midday heat. We run the walk year-round.

Do I need experience to rent a SUP board?

No prior experience is needed. The balance-and-launch walkthrough takes around 15 minutes and covers everything — stance, paddling technique, and how to fall safely. The stretch of river near our base is calm and wide, which makes it a good place to learn.

How do I get to the raft house?

We meet guests at 204 Saeng Chuto Road and take them upriver by longtail boat. The journey takes about 20 minutes. We send the exact meeting-point details and timing in the confirmation message after booking.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made more than 48 hours before the start time receive a full refund or a rescheduled date. Cancellations inside 48 hours are reviewed on a case-by-case basis — please call us directly. Weather-related cancellations initiated by us are always rescheduled at no additional cost.

Can children join the activities?

Children are welcome on the heritage walk and the raft house stay. For the SUP rental, we recommend a minimum age of 14 and ask that all under-18s paddle with a supervising adult. Please mention the ages of any children when you send your enquiry so we can plan accordingly.
